The exhibitions, screenings and discussions are free and open to everyone. The two panel discussions will see leading experts Hikmat Darmawan (Researching Indonesian comics since 2000), Dr Ekky Imanjaya (film critic and scholar specializing in fantasy film), Pete Tombs (Founder of the Mondo Macabro label), Bastian Meiresonne (Asian Cinema Specialist), and Dr Iain Smith (Senior Lecturer in Film studies KCL). Once an industry with publishers across the archipelago, with a strong tradition of graphic novels since 1950s, producers and fans of Indonesian comics today form something of a cultish sub culture. The exhibition of Indonesian comics will showcase popular genre comics from fantasy strips from the 1930s to the independent comics of the 21st century. The world of Indonesian comics is something of a blankspot in world comic history.

Jaka Sembung is a classic exploitation film from 1981 described by one fan as ‘Islamic martial arts mayhem’. The three feature films take audiences from the early 1980s up to the present day. Three documentary films, Garuda Power, Fantasy Films from Indonesia and Blood Guts and Bad Acting, will help to introduce and contextualize the genre by giving rare glimpses of some of the less well-known films along with interviews with industry professionals. The film screenings will cater for established fans of Indonesian fantasy films, fans of world comics and newcomers to the genre. All of this will be contextualised by two panel discussions with leading experts from Indonesia and Europe. As well as a small exhibition of Indonesian comics since the 1930s, we will be screening three full-length fiction films from the 1980s to the present day, and three documentaries on the genre of fantasy and exploitation films. This event brings together cult comics and fantasy films as a way of exploring an important aspect of popular culture in Indonesia today and understanding how Indonesia is perceived by a growing global fan base.
